Virginia local and state government facilities hold nearly 20,000 undocumented immigrant inmates that either is awaiting trial or serving time for living in the U.S. illegally. The State Compensation Board collected the data between 2008 and 2015. The report shows 5,422 out of the roughly 20,000 illegal immigrants held in the custody of jails are awaiting deportation.
